About the Procedure

Colonoscopy is a procedure used to detect changes or abnormalities in the large intestine (colon) and rectum.

During the procedure, a doctor inserts a colonoscope—a long, flexible tube—through the anus and into the rectum and colon. The scope gently inflates the colon with air to expand it, providing a better view.

A tiny video camera at the tip of the tube sends a clear image to a monitor, allowing the doctor to thoroughly examine the lining of your colon for polyps, inflammation, or other issues.

Why it's done

Screening: Detecting colon cancer or precancerous polyps early.
Investigation: Finding the cause of abdominal pain, rectal bleeding, or chronic constipation/diarrhea.
Treatment: Removing polyps or taking tissue samples (biopsy) during the exam.
